AN OVERVIEW NATURAL SOIL &

GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION

 

Bioremediation is the application of

biological processes to eliminate or

reduce contamination. Bioscience

specializes in the use of microbial

processes. These processes may be

aerobic (using molecular oxygen),

anaerobic (occurring in the absence

of molecular oxygen) or a combination of both. Microbial remediation processes may be simple or complex but the fundamental principles are the same. Microbes are capable of using many substances either as a source of energy or as nutrients for growth. Bioremediation exploits the metabolic processes of these microbes to convert contaminant chemicals into harmless end-products like carbon dioxide, water and biomass.
